Web Worm Web – A Natural Trap for Bio-aerosols

The fall web worm (Hyphantria cunea Drury) is a widely distributed pest of shade trees and shrubs in the Austin area. The webs appear from late summer to early fall.  We collected and analyzed webs from a variety of locations around Austin in order to learn if they could serve as a natural trap for airborne bio-particles.  Altogether, 15 webs (5 each from South Austin, Central Austin and North Austin) were collected from different locations of Austin to study the diversity of bio-particles which were trapped. The results of the study will be published soon.
