Common Species of TexasU. alata (Winged Elm), U. americana (American Elm), U. crassifolia (Cedar Elm), U. rubra (Slippery Elm)

Elms are primarily found in the eastern half of the U.S. and up to four species grow in Texas. They flower at two different periods. The fall blooming elms, such as the cedar elms and september elms, bloom from August to October. In contrast, the american elms, winged elms and slippery elms bloom from early February to March. Allergenicity of the various species of Ulmus ranges from moderate, for the spring blooming elms, to moderate or severe for the fall blooming elms. Unfortunately, a fungal infection known as Dutch Elms disease has greatly reduced the range and number of american elm trees.
