
Populus
Common Species of Texas: P. arizonica (Arizona Cottonwood), P. deltoides (Eastern and Plains Cottonwood), P. fremontii (Fremont or Rio Grande Cottonwood), Populus sargentii (Plains Cottonwood)
The genus, Populus, is composed of aspens, cottonwoods and poplars. Cottonwoods can be found throughout Texas near lakes and rivers whereas aspens and poplars are rare in the state, only found high in the mountains of west Texas. Cottonwoods are wind pollinated and bloom in the spring from late March to May and are considered moderately allergenic.
