Common Species of Texas: J. asheii (Mountain Cedar, Ashe Juniper, Texas Cedar), J. pinchotii (Red-Berry Juniper), J. virginiana (Eastern Juniper, Red Cedar)
Mountain cedar has covered Central Texas like a weed and become one of the more prevalent plants, and more prominent problems, of the hill country. It blooms from December through January and produces large amounts of buoyant pollen which can at times billow from the small trees like smoke. Mountain cedars have separate male and female plants where the male plants produce tiny cones and the female plants produce berry-like fruits. The pollen, produced only in the male cones, is highly allergenic.
