This cosmopolitan genus has been isolated from air, paper, soil, etc.  It is usually found on dead herbaceous stems and has been known to produce black rot on vegetables.

On common laboratory media, the colonies are effuse and grey, brown, olivaceous brown, or black, and velvety or cottony; though natural growth characteristics may vary.
