Fungi in this category belong to the order of Ustilaginales. These parasitic fungi attack vascular plants targeting specific organs that have the most high energy resources, i.e. seeds. 

 

Two types of this fungus are widely eaten.  The first delicacy is the black spore masses of corn smut in Mexico.  Also, in China individuals eat the stems of the wild rice which suffer from hypertrophy from the infection of the fungus.
