Penicillium

Aerobiology Gallery
The genus, Penicillium, is ubiquitous and has numerous species. It is widely reported indoors as the small spore size favors easy air dispersion. They are known to cause many types of fruit rots and many species are reported as toxin producers.
Penicillium can be speciated when grown in culture. However, when the spores are found in non-culturable air samples they are reported under the category “Aspergilli/Penicilli” based on the spore size (less than 5µm). This category may contain genera such as Aspergillus, Penicillium, Paecilomyces, Mucor, Rhizopus Absidia etc.
On common laboratory media most of these colonies grow rapidly in many colors producing dry spores, though natural growth characteristics can vary
