Somewhat common in our outdoor air samples, Nigrospora is found throughout the world especially in tropical regions. It can be found on food or in soil though it typically appears on rice and many other plants.
On common laboratory media colonies begin as shades of white and turn dark brown to black due to sporulation though natural growth characteristics can vary.
Nigrospora is considered allergenic and, though rare, some cases of infection have been reported especially among immuno-compromised individuals.
