These organisms fall under the division Myxomycota, and their spores resemble smut spores to such an extent that we usually group them together during identification. These organisms are plasmodia that ingest bacteria and food particles in soil and decaying wood. With this strange life cycle, they go through an extreme metamorphosis from a plasmodium to a stalked, dry sporangium that produces spores.
