This genus is among the most common soil fungi. It has been known as a pathogen to cattle, swine, amphibians, platypuses, and occasionally humans, infecting them with zygomycosis and primary cutaneous mycosis are widely reported. They are widely found to grow in moisture rich materials like rotten vegetables.
On common laboratory media, its fast-growing colonies are white to grey growing several centimeters high; though natural growth characteristics may vary.
