Memnoniella is a genus which resembles Stachybotrys, and many of the characteristics among the genera are similar, including the production of potent toxic metabolites and enzymes which degrade cellulose. We occasionally find spores of Memnoniella solely though, more commonly, it appears in our air samples with Stachybotrys.
Memnoniella is found worldwide in soil and, most notably, on material containing cellulose including paper, textiles and plants. For instance, certain species are common on banana plants while others are common on mulberry trees.
On common laboratory media colonies are black to blackish-green though natural growth characteristics can vary.
