This thermotolerant fungus can grow at 50 to 55ºC while other fungi usually prefer 20 to 30ºC.  It has been isolated from soil, wood, and plant debris.

 

On common laboratory media, the colonies are effuse, cottony, at first white, then turn grey, greyish brown, or blackish brown; though natural growth characteristics may vary.
