Depending on growth conditions, many fungal species can either go through an anamorphic (asexual) phase or a teleomorphic (sexual) phase. Emericella, similar to Eurotium, is the teleomorphic stage of many of the Aspergillus species. It is commonly found in soil, though it is also found on potatoes, grains and citrus fruits.

On common laboratory media colonies range from yellow-green to purple-brown shades, though mature colonies are typically reddish-brown. However, natural growth characteristics can vary.

Emericella can be allergenic and toxigenic to humans as certain species produce sterigmatocystin and emestrin as well as other toxins.
