Cladosporium is the most
common fungi found in our indoor and outdoor air samples. It is a
ubiquitous genus typically found on old or dead plant material. Some
species are plant pathogens, while others are saprophytic and cause food
spoilage problems even in environments such as refrigerators.
On common laboratory media colonies appear olivaceous-brown to blackish-brown though natural growth characteristics can vary.
Cladosporium can be considered allergenic and some species are human pathogens. Epicladosporic acid is one among several mycotoxins produced by the genus which has been implicated in the outbreaks of certain human diseases.
