Cercospora can be common in our outdoor air samples and on occasion appear in large numbers. On common laboratory media colonies typically appear greyish though natural growth characteristics can vary.

Species of Cercospora are considered parasites of a wide variety of plants often causing pale-brown, round spots on leaves. Most notably, they attack economically important crops such as carrots and peanuts. In contrast, Cercospora rodmanii has been considered a mycoherbicide as it is used as a biocontrol agent of water hyacinth.
