The genus, Aspergillus, has numerous species and is reported worldwide. Certain species are frequently reported as human pathogens (A. fumigatus, A. niger), allergens (most species of Aspergillus) and noted for the production of toxins (A. flavus, A. ochraceus). They are known to contaminate stored products and considered a nuisance within industrial production units.

Aspergillus can be speciated when grown in culture. However, when found in non-culturable air samples, they are reported under the category “Aspergilli/Penicilli” based on the spore size (less than 5µm). This category may contain genera such as Aspergillus, Penicillium, Paecilomyces, Mucor, Rhizopus Absidia etc.

On common laboratory media most of these colonies grow rapidly in many colors producing dry spores, though natural growth characteristics can vary.
