Certain Ascospores (i.e. Cheatomium) are easily identifiable and can be reported by the genus. However, many of the genera of Ascomycotina are not distinctive in our air samples and are therefore reported as an Ascospore.

The Ascomycotina comprise a large number of the fungi genera and can be found everywhere. They are differentiated from other divisions by their teleomorphic (sexual) phase.  In this case, the ascospores are contained in an ascus and are expelled into the air.
